Uganda: Ban On Animal Imports Affects Livestock Industry

John Kasozi

18 September 2007

Kampala — THE ban on the importation of breeding animals and shortage of liquid nitrogen following the outbreak of the mad cow disease about 10 years ago, has undermined artificial insemination.

During the celebrations to mark 25 years of HPI Uganda, Alex Kirui of Heifer Project International Kenya noted that if the risk factors are not addressed, their efforts to improve on the livestock sector could come to naught.

About 70% of Heifer Uganda programmes depend on artificial insemination. They intend to carry out 100,000 inseminations in the coming two years. HPI only imports semen from the U.S. because of the mad cow disease in Europe.

"We have totally failed to get high quality breeding cows from our partners in Europe," he lamented.
