Nigeria: Senate Laments Insecurity in Country

A new law allowing private citizens to investigate crimes has been suggested by the Senate.
The suggestion came when the Senate was condemning the security situation in the country and the murder of Mr. Oladimeji Olusegun Moses representing Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency in the House of Representatives.
Speaking on the murder, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said time has come for the legislature to pass a bill that will allow for private investigations.
He said: "It is time for us to take a decisive action. This is the time for us to pass the Bill on private detectives which has been with the Senate committee on national security and intelligence since the last senate. It is time for the private sector to be involved in investigations."
In his contribution to the motion, Senator Kola Bajomo said politically motivated assassinations in the country is a set back for democracy.
He said: "We must find a way to put an end to this trend; we should look for a way to protect political leaders because they represent the people and cannot run away from them." Also speaking on the matter, Senator Nicholas Ugbane cited the poor state of police equipments as a reason for the rising crime rate in the country.
"When armed robbers strike in some places, you find both policemen and civilians running for safety. Who will protect the other and the police will tell you that the weapons of the miscreants are more sophisticated than theirs," Ugbane added.
In her contribution, Senator Grace Bent pointed at election fallouts as cause of some of the politically motivated assassinations in the country.
She said: "I am very worried about the level of porous security we have some of us here are still vulnerable because of the nature of the elections we had. It is for us to take our individual security very seriously. We must do something we should talk to the police. Politics is not an end in itself it is a means to an end."
Senator Nuhu Aliyu said there was need to improve the security within the National Assembly itself: "You find people who don't have anything doing here just roaming about.
We are not safe here I have heard of a legislator who was killed inside the parliament building and I will not want that to happen here."

He said the Senate committee on security, together with their colleagues in the House will meet with the Sergeant at Arms to design ways to arrest the matter. Hon. Oladimeji Olusegun Moses was killed by unknown assassins in his constituency in Oyo state over the week end.
