Zimbabwe: Organisation Takes Clean-Up Campaign to Suburban Schools

Harare — ENVIRONMENT Africa has taken the Clean-up Zimbabwe 2007 Campaign to suburban schools in Harare to complement efforts by the City of Harare, which has been accused of failing to deliver as commemorations to mark clean environments continues.

Harare residents are not happy with the council, which they accuse of failing to collect refuse.

The clean-up started at Masaisai Primary School along Lorraine Drive in Westgate on Tuesday and ended at Westgate Shopping complex.

Environment Africa field officer responsible for Harare Miss Fiona Manyebvu said the clean-up was very successful and people appreciated the move by the organisation.

The campaign, which was launched in Harare by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, Cde Andrew Langa last Friday had its main event commemorated in Victoria Falls over the weekend.

Cde Langa said it was everyone's mandate to see to it that the surroundings are clean before people could go in the streets to do cleanliness campaigns.

"This clean up campaign can only be successful if people clean up their surroundings first, and then go in the streets to campaign for the same cause," he said.

The deputy minister challenged all Zimbabweans to take stock of what contribution they have made towards attaining a clean and healthy environment during the on-going Clean-up Zimbabwe 2007 campaigns.

Environment Africa regional manager Mr Barnabas Mawire said the main event was held in Victoria Falls to conscientise the people on the importance of cleaning up lantana camara, a shrub that has negative effects on the well-being of both human beings and animals.
