Bujumbura

Two persons were killed in Makebuko commune of Gitega province on 18 September. On the same day, two other persons were killed in a conflict over a land in Mushikamo of the Rutegama commune in Muramvya province. Both of these bloody events were carried out by people who own weapons illegally.

Violence continues to escalate across Burundi even while the programme of disarmament is supposed to have started.

The leader of the commission in charge of the disarmament, Mr Sylvestre Kibeceri, indicates that the programme consists of two phases: free disarmament with compensation and forced disarmament. He adds that there are no provincial committees to carry out the task of the disarmament because of a lack of material means.
