Johannesburg — THE launch of yesterday's Board Barometer was another major step in SA's slow transformation into a country that cares about governance and shareholder activism. Though the creators of this new measure of the effectiveness of listed companies' boards, Leaders Unlimited and TerraNova, are two small and mostly unknown firms, their criteria looked sound and their sources of information were solid.
Further, the thinking done on certain issues such as independence, share options, disclosure and the number of board seats a director should hold, all advance SA's corporate environment.
