Nigeria: The Senate This Week - Matters of Survival

Lagos — Deep depression was discernible as the Senate resumed sitting last Tuesday. A reason for the dour mood was the weekend assassination of a member of the House of Representatives, Segun Oladimeji from Oyo State. Oladimeji, who by some accounts never lost an election in his constituency, however, lost the battle for life when alleged assassins pumped hot lead into him in Ibadan penultimate Friday.

So when within five minutes of the commencement of the day's sitting the public address system packed up, the reluctance of the lawmakers to consider any substantive issue became even more evident. Senate President, David Mark had to stand to bark out the order of the day which he said would be centred on the death of Oladimeji.
