Women constitute about sixty percent of persons infected with HIV. Some of the women have transmitted the deadly disease to ten percent of infants across Borno state, governor Ali Modu Sheriff, has said. Sheriff disclosed this at an awareness program when members of the National Agency for the Control of Aids, (NACA), paid a visit to the state.
The Borno state governor said from records made available to him, based on a recent research showed that more women in the state were discovered to be contracting HIV in relation to men
He also noted that it has been discovered that a high number of newly born babies (10%) have been infected by their mothers through mother to child transmission.
"Currently in Borno state, according to the last Sero Prevalence Sentinel Survey, 60% of people living with HIV/ AIDS in the state are women, 10% infants" Sheriff said.
Governor Sheriff also said that research has shown that women in the state were infected irrespective of their moral conducts as some of them were infected by their husbands while others through casual relationships.
He added that beside the women, homosexuals, promiscuous persons, sick persons who benefit from unscreened blood transfusion and so many youths in the state, were at high risk of becoming infected.
