Angola: Education Department Intends to Cancel Charging During Enrolment

Luanda — Luanda's Education department will be strict during the 2008/2009 academic year, with teachers and administration staffs of certain public schools if they are caught charging money during enrolment processes.

Speaking to ANGOP, at Ingombota district, the provincial director of Education provincial director, André Soma said that the culprits will be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Police and later expelled from the sector.

According to the official, this practise has been obstructing the enrolment of children and youths into the schooling system due to their parents' lack of financial capacity.

At the moment, he added, the department is working with the provincial sectors of Social Welfare and of Justice, to find mechanisms to ease the insertion of children without documents into the education system.

Meanwhile, André Soma recommended private education institutions to strictly abide by the guidance of the Education Ministry to only charge for ten months during the academic year.
