Burundi: The Leader of Uprona Summoned By the Police

25 September 2007

Bujumbura — The Special Investigation Unit of the national police summoned on morning of september 24th the leader of Uprona, Mr Aloys Rubuka. A short interrogation was carried out by this unit. The interrogation focussed on the confirmation of the meeting of the central committee of Uprona that was held a week ago. This meeting was held despite the ban on such an event by the interior ministry that feared clashes between two wings of Uprona. During this meeting the current First Vice-President of the Republic, Dr Martin Nduwimana was sidelined.

Uprona party celebrated on this 23 september the 46th anniversary of its victory which led to the independence of Burundi. On 18 September only wreaths of flowers were put on the mausoleum of Prince Louis Rwagasore although wing of Antoine Cishahayo also danced on that place outraging a number of persons who that this place should be respected. Following the current crisis within this party, festivities marking this anniversary took place separately on 23 September.

The current leader of Uprona, Mr Rubuka, strengthened by the presence of most the members of the parliament and the Uprona wing of Mukasi, indicated that â-šthe process of unification of the party is underway". A team of 14 persons with the mission to study the causes that led to the split of the party was appointed.

The First-Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Martin Nduwimana, is struggling hard to stay in the game after he was sidelined by his party on charges that he was creating splits within the party of Louis Rwagasore using the state's means. His struggle goes on as talks between the President of the Republic and major political parties aimed at appointing a new cabinet are continuing with hopes that an agreement is to be brokered very soon. With this agreement Dr. Nduwimana runs the risk of losing his position. The leader of his wing, Mr. Antoine Cishahayo indicated during the festivities that a person from his wing will accompany Rubuka in these talks.
