Angola: Government to Reinforce Support to Historical Research

29 September 2007

Luanda — The Fund of Support to Artistic and Cultural Activities will be rearranged so as to provide major aid to scientific and research actions, announced Friday here the Angolan minister of Culture, Boaventura Cardoso.

The government official was speaking at the closing session of the Third National Meeting on the History of Angola.

He stressed that this decision will enable to reinforce the support given to actions intended to transmit to younger generations knowledge and information on Angola's history, stirring their interest and liking of the country's past.

Boaventura Cardoso appealed to the international community, the business companies and individual citizens to support the efforts of scientific research that the Culture Ministry will carry out, as recommended at the meeting.

According to the minister, the needs around this project can not be covered just with state funds, reason why it is paramount the collaboration of the private sector.

The Cabinet minister explained that the strengthening and consolidation of the research work in the various domains of the science, and particularly regarding the history of Angola, will stimulate a stronger sense of "Angolannes", since it values cultural and social integration.

"the challenges are great and the success of their materialisation will only happen if all the parties involved are mobilised towards it", he stressed.

The Fund of Support to Artistic and Cultural Activities, approved by the government, started to be implemented in 2002 and was created with the objective of supporting activities in the fields of books publishing, plastic arts, cultural associations, cinema and audiovisuals, promotion of cultural events, music publishing, social support to artists and writers, research, dance and theatre.

The Third International Meeting on the History of Angola took place on 25-28 September, in the Talatona Conventions Centre, in Luanda.
