Nairobi — Veterans Paul Murunga and Roney Mwenesi steered Kenya Commercial Bank to an emphatic 43-0 victory over the Kenya College of Accountancy in a one-sided Kabeberi Rugby Sevens match at the KCB sportsgrounds yesterday. In another match, Mwamba launched their campaign with a 36-0 drubbing of Moi University.

Boasting a large number of skillful players, the Lions started off on a high with Mwenesi outpacing his markers to score the first try.

Benjamin Otieno converted as the bankers took a 7-0 lead. KCB then continued tormenting their opponents with electric paces and magnificent ball handling as they condemned the students to chasing the ball round the field. At the break, KCB were already 19-0 up.

Had intentions known

On resumption, the bankers immediately had their title intentions known in earnest as they upped their game and stretched their lead to 36-0.

Mwenesi hammered the last nail to the accounting students' coffin by touching down yet again for his second try, and once again, the experienced Otieno made no mistake with the conversion to take the tally to 43-0, the tournament's high score so far. Speaking after the match, KCB captain Sebastian Shivoka made clear their intention of winning the title.

"This was a very fine start and we intend to keep up the spirit. We send out a warning in earnest to the rest of the contenders.

"Let all and sundry know that this year's title is ours," said Shivoka, In the other game, Mwamba made mince meat of their opponents.

But despite losing with such a big margin, Moi University's captain Nathan Olunga remained confident, saying his boys would recover and win the rest of their matches.

"Our team lacks the experience to match what Mwamba has.

They were better than us in all departments, but this is a learning process.

"I'm sure we'l recover and do well in the other games," Onunga said. In other results, KCB defeated Daystar University 29-0, while defending champions Kenya Harlequin walloped Nazarene University 24-0.
