Nairobi — Nakuru RFC are this year's Kabeberi Sevens rugby tournament champions.

They won the title in style, with a merciless 14-5 demolition of Impala in the final at KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka, Nairobi on Sunday.

Kenya College of Accountancy won the Shield, Moi University took the Bowl while Strathmore University won the Plate.

Gibson Weru made two tries for Nakuru, who took a commanding 7-0 lead at half-time.

Nakuru captain Vincent Moses said this was the launching pad for the two circuits at stake.

"Teamwork has made us win the tourney. Despite the fact that we were missing most of our top players, we proved our worth," said Moses.

"We narrowly lost out in the semi-finals during the recent Nakuru Sevens, thus missing out on the first circuit, but winning the Kabeberi Sevens feels good," he said.

The other circuits are Driftwood and Christie sevens tournaments.

On their way to victory, Nakuru beat Strathmore University 14-0, before knocking out Mwamba 12-0 in the Main Cup semi-finals.

Defending champions Kenya Harlequins lost 26-19 to Strathmore University.

Late win

Despite being touted as tournament's favourites, Harlequins lacked their usual flair. After tying 7-7 at half-time, the university students stepped up their game and sent their opponents packing after snatching a late win in dying seconds of the game.

On their part, KCA dismissed Kenyatta University's Black Blad 14-12 at an entertaining Shield title final. KCA, who took a 12-5 lead by the breather, ran out of steam and let their opponents reduce the deficit. Despite the rallying, Black Blad lost out 14-12 at fulltime.

Moi University made amends for their 36-0 drubbing by Mwamba to see off a determined Daystar University 31-7. Kevin Luvega and Evans Kili touched down twice, with Edwin Mutai taking their tries tally to five. Moi had defeated KCA 24-10 at an earlier match, and squeezed 14-0 past a hapless JKUAT. In other results, KCB defeated Black Blad 14-5, saw off Mwamba 17-0, before crushing 19-12 to Strathmore University, at the plate semifinal. In the only women match of the day saw Mwamba ladies whitewash Vivi girls 41-5.
