Teachers have played an essential role in educational advancement and have contributed immensely to the development of man and modern society. Teachers provide not only knowledge and qualifications but also universal ethical principles of social justice, tolerance and peace.

They play an important role in the economic, social and cultural development of our societies. But it is very unfortunate that this role is being neglected by societies with the result that the role of teachers is often misunderstood.

On 5th October 1966, a special inter-government conference adopted the UNESCO/ILO recommendations regarding the status of teachers, which gave teachers an instrument that defines their responsibilities and asserts their rights. But today after 41 years where is the status of teachers ? In today's rapidly changing world, the role of teachers is becoming more and more challenging. In a report published in 1996/7, it is mentioned that teachers should be giving "the best of themselves in the fulfilment of their tasks" and there should be their active involvement in the decision making process at school".

Teachers need to be protected against unfair and unwarranted interference in matters that essentially fall within the purview of their professional responsibility. Decisions are taken and the teacher is the last one to know. Those who are supposed to defend teachers have abdicated since long because they cannot defend themselves. It is the general feeling among teachers that they have become very vulnerable and defenceless because their voice is unheard. It is interesting to quote the recent report of the Mauritius Research Council on indiscipline in school. "Teachers most prominently feel disempowered to deal with cases of indiscipline and violence because of lack of support from the relevant authorities."

World Teachers Day is dedicated to correcting this situation and recognising the devoted men and women who have the sacred mission of transmitting education which is the lifeblood of democracy.
