Bujumbura — The Bureau of the national assembly has decided to reinstate MP's Léonard Nyangoma, the former leader of CNDD, and Mathias Basabose, a formerly prominent personality in the ruling party.
The political turmoil that hit Burundi following the rise to power of the CNDD-FDD caused these two MP's to flee Burundi year ago.
Fear of criticism led the ruling party to implicate MP Nyangoma in a fabricated coup in 2006. MP Basabose was dismissed from CNDD-FDD after he spoke out against the calamitous management of the party, Hussein Radjabu, and especially the bribery involved in the contract given to a Rwandan company to renew the Bujumbura-Rumonge road.
These two personalities fled to Europe where Basabose still lives. The reinstatement of these two men marks a new era in the relationships between the government and the opposition parties.
