Prince Annan

4 October 2007

The Prisons female team yesterday registered its name on the Africa Clubs Handball ranking as the thirteenth best club in Africa when they beat Loban Handball Club of Burkina Faso 29-24 in their classification match.

After loosing yesterday to Nigerian, Congolese and DR Congo opposition, the ladies played their hearts out to secure their first win of the competition, thanks to adroit display of skills by the team. The ladies had vowed to win this match after bowing to Nigeria's Grasshoppers 15-28, Inter Club of Congo 21-40, and DR Congo's Heritage Club 21-40.

Standing out for the ladies in the match were injured SWAG handball player of the year Comfort Danso, Rosina Lomo, Emilia Abbey, Stella Aduyor, and the ever improving youngster Alice Gli.

Their male counterparts have also qualified to play in the classification matches for the African ranking and they will face two francophone countries from tomorrow. Burkina Fasso's USFA will be the first to test the resolve of Prisons, while Novotel Club of Guinea will have their turn later in the day. Its been a turbulent ride for the Prisons male team, as they also lost yesterday to Safety Club of Nigeria (16-20)and Etoile of Congo (23-32). They however redeemed some image by drawing against DR Congo's Ruwe Club 25-25.

Both Prisons male and female clubs have been stretched to their elastic limits in this year's championship.Due to their late arrival in Benin, the team has had to battle with fatigue after playing two matches everyday. That notwithstanding, the team has endeared itself to the teeming handball fans in Cotonou. Names of some Ghanaian players have been on the lips of coaches and officials alike thus giving some consolation to the handlers of the teams.

Frank Mensah, Seth Arthur, Joseph Quaidoo, Saaka Hamza, Theophilus Ashong, Rosevelt Okine and Henry Aryee are being spoken of everywhere the team goes.

The ladies have also had their fair share of the limelight with Young Alice Gli leading the pack. SWAG handball player of the year Comfort Danso, Rosina Lomo, Stella Aduyor, Eunice Nartey, as well as goalkeeper Theodora Arday are household names at the various match venues.
