Bujumbura — Violence has escalated in Burundi during the past three months. More than 143 people were killed in Burundi, said police Commissioner Alain Guillaume Bunyoni in a press conference today.
The chief of the police attributes this escalation of violence to FNL combatants and various gangs of robbers.
Alain Guillaume does not deny that the police forces' performance has not been entirely satisfactory, but claims that this is due to the varied background of members of the national police. The Burundian National Police is a mix of the former police, the former Burundian Armed Forces and the former armed political movements who lack proper experience.
The chief of police said that the police lack adequate materials to combat the growing violence in Burundi. He envisions the police being trained in the near future.
Violence started to escalate after the PALIPEHUTU-FNL delegation in the ceasefire monitoring team returned to the bush in July.
Violence has been carried out in various areas of the country despite the presence of considerable numbers of police forces.
