Windhoek — Since 2000 visual artist Ismael Wallo Tjijenda started to exhibit his works not only in Namibia but also in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi, Zambia, South Africa, Germany, UK and Sweden. He is presently a lecturer for cardboard printmaking at the John Muafangejo Art Centre, Katutura. He likes to 'explore the possibilities of what I can offer to what is available'.
The well-known Namibian artist was recently sponsored by the Goethe-Institut and Air Namibia to attend "Documenta 12", a renowned modern art exhibition in Kassel, Germany, for artists from all over the world. "As an artist, I am working in a style influenced by everyday life. This I want to use as a tool of engagement for the society I live in. My concept has therefore significantly challenges stereotype. I consistently focus on Namibia's social-political conditions and apartheid's implications. Many of my works focus on violence against woman, child abuse, HIV/AIDS and violence within the black township," Ismael said.
Catherine Calothy, Director of the FNCC, will open the exhibition on October 11 at 19h00 at the Goethe-Centre/NaDS, Auditorium. The exhibition runs from October 11 to 23.
