Nigeria: Bankole Leads in Speakership Race

The next speaker of the House of Representatives may be Oxford- and Harvard-educated Dimeji Bankole from Ogun State. During the week, he emerged as the leading contender in the race to succeed Hon. Patricia Olubunmi Etteh, the current speaker who appears to have been severely damaged by the reports of the Idoko Panel.

Hon. Bankole, who is a second termer in the House and represents Abeokuta South federal constituency of Ogun State, was endorsed by several northern caucuses of the House during the week. He is currently the chairman, House Committee on Land Transportation.
