TEACHERS have been accused of being part of the issues responsible for the drop in the quality of education. Governor Celestine Omehia who noted this in Port Harcourt said they sometimes aid and abet examination malpractice.
While urging those behind such acts to change, the governor said his administration would do every possible to return public schools to their good old days in the state.
He said the government had already procured laboratory equipment for one hundred of these secondary schools.
He opined that to return the schools to their glorious status, the quality of teaching personnel must be improved, and accordingly advocated training and retraining of teachers in the State to keep them abreast of new techniques in the profession.
The Governor pointed out that improvement in the quality of teachers would go a long way in improving the quality of education.
The State Chief Executive, who directed the State Chairman of NUT to liaise with the Commissioner for Education to articulate the problems of teachers, promised to give priority to such requests but called for dedicated service from them.

He told the teachers that he would honour all approvals made by his predecessor in respect of welfare, assuring that government would contribute 50 per cent of the remaining cost of work on the Teachers" House Project, while the NUT would take care of the balance. Governor Omehia who directed the Commissioner for Education to reinvigorate the Inspectorate Division of the Ministry said the move would improve the quality of education in the State. The NUT, he said, should organize regular workshops and seminars for its members to broaden their horizon, encourage interaction and enhance the quest for professionalism.
