Teachers of the secondary schools grouped in the National Council for Teachers of the Secondary Schools (CONAPES) have started a strike three weeks after the opening of this school year.

The majority of all public schools responded to the call for a strike that was made shortly after the government failed to react to these teachers' demands.

Other two unions of teachers of the primary and secondary schools envisage to start a strike on 16 October should the government fail to meet their demands.

These unions include SNEB and SYNAPEP. They also demand the implementation of agreements that were signed 2002. This is the first strike of teachers since CNDD-FDD accessed power and might be a precursor for more strikes by other civil servants.

The adjustment of salaries for civil servants was the promise that was made to these teachers during the transitional period.

Two years after the transition ended, this adjustment has not yet been carried out. This adjustment of salaries was intended to give same wages to people who have the same educational level regardless of their domains of work in the civil service.
