Kampala — A TOTAL of 1,078 counter-terrorism Special Police Constables have been deployed in Kampala city ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting due in November. The constables, grouped in threes, have guns, communication gadgets and batons.
They are located at various public places like supermarkets, taxi parks, fuel stations, bars, restaurants and traffic light junctions.
The New Vision yesterday spotted some of the constables at the Nakawa, Kitgum House, Steers, Clock Tower and Wandegeya junctions.
Speaking at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters on Monday, the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, said the constables would also protect the traffic Police officers from being attacked by motorists.
"These new recruits will maintain peace and order in the city," said Kayihura.
"The force will help us detect terrorists, dispose bombs and fight terrorism," said Kayihura.
He warned the recruits against 'misusing the guns'. "Do not shoot anyhow. Use the guns to combat terrorism and avert chaos."
The constables will also be instrumental in engaging hooligans and thugs who cause public disorder in the city.
The force underwent a three months' training at the Police Training School Kabalye in Masindi district.
