Bujumbura — Schisms continue to tear PALIPEHUTU-FNL. Over the past three months, three factions have appeared within this armed political movement.
The newest faction is led by Colonel NSENGIYUMVA Elias (Mwalimu). He claims that he is leading a battalion made up of those who were stationed in Democratic Republic of Congo and Bujumbura province. His combatants are stationed in the waiting area of Randa where they arrived a week ago.
The three dissident groups that have appeared within PALIPEHUTU-FNL since its talks with the monitoring team froze all indicate that they are tired of fighting and have left their leader who is still considering continuing the war.
The mediation team as well as the Regional initiative for peace in Burundi has firmly rejected the demands of Agathon Rwasa. The dismissal of Charles Nqakula as the mediator in Burundi's conflict is not on the agenda for the summit of the regional initiative that is to be held soon. This summit of heads of states of the region is aimed at reviving Burundi's peace process that was damaged partly due to the absence of a moral guarantor who would have hastened the implementation of the deal signed by the belligerents in July 2006 by exerting pressure on both sides.

The regional initiative has already set 31 December 2007 as the deadline for the end of the implementation of the deals reached between the government of Burundi and PALIPEHUTU-FNL, yet the schism in FNL may jeopardize the whole peace process.
