TELECOM Namibia yesterday became the first country in emerging sub-Saharan Africa - which excludes South Africa - to be awarded membership to the Cisco Systems programme.
The Cisco programme includes more than 300 global members and allows them to take advantage of Cisco's marketing and technical expertise in the promotion of their network services.
Nasdaq-listed Cisco Systems is a California-based company which designs and sells networking and communications technology and services.
Telecom Namibia's General Manager for ICT and Corporate Business Solutions, Coenraad Coetzee, welcomed the partnership saying it would help the fixed-line phone operator grow and build network infrastructure which will accommodate and facilitate customer growth.
He said, "Being endorsed in the Cisco-powered programme means Telecom Namibia's customers will be able to take advantage of our investment in world-class technology, helping them grow their networks and implement applications with ease."

Cisco's General Manager for Emerging Africa, Anthony Vonsee, said his company was happy to do business with Telecom.
"The programme was developed as a way for Cisco to endorse service providers that have been identified as having made a commitment to using Cisco's technology to help drive reliability and customer satisfaction.
"Telecom Namibia has met these requirements, and we are pleased to give it Cisco's stamp of approval," he said.
