Port Louis

I refer to your issue of 3rd October and the letter from "G" under BP 247 concerning the income tax imposed on pensioners.

In this letter it is stated that the old age pension, which the government pays to all those who are over the age of 60, is subject to taxation.

In fact, it is excluded from tax by the definition of the word "emoluments", which my dictionary gives as follows:

A salary, fee or benefit from employment or office.

There is nothing in the tax declaration form which specifies that income other than emoluments and interest should be declared.

Thus the old age pension is not taxable.

Open letter to ICAC

We contractors are troubled as we are not being considered equally when sending tenders in the ministries department, namely the NDU. Since this government has been directing the country in 2005, one company is being awarded with most of the tenders, job permit contractors being renewed without legal procedures, etc. Is it because the manager himself is friend with a minister or his personal secretary a political agent?

Having personal contacts over the phone, going for lunch and things are being done as per their wish? So what when there is power in hand? Is there no consideration for others? We are also human beings with the same right. Why this corruption?

We wish you to enquire between all authorities such as CWA, CEB, WWA, Ministry of Public Infrastructure, etc. Is extra money being paid to inspectors or other people in head departments? We have been observing these points for years and we are fed up now.

We thank you to enquire on all these doubts very soon.
