The country's leading telecommunications service provider, the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), has reduced Internet bandwidth prices by up to 64 percent as part of its commitment to providing affordable Internet access.

The price cut took effect on Monday this week.

Due to a substantial increase in bandwidth demand from the business sector and domestic (residential) consumers, BTC recently upgraded its Internet bandwidth capacity, leading to a growth in economies of scale, the benefit of which the parastatal is extending to customers.

"There has been growth in various parts of the business, and it is only logical that customers realise the benefits of business partnerships with BTC," says Duncan Pie, Head of Public Access Communications, about the decision to slash prices.

"The bandwidth upgrade has ensured optimum capacity for customers looking to more bandwidth for their business enterprises."

BTC offers terrestrial bandwidth, which has superior benefits of better quality, low latency, scalability, and redundancy, ensuring that the customer gets world class Internet connectivity.

"It is important that customers' confidence in our products is maintained," says Pie, adding that it is as a result of that confidence that data and Internet business continues to grow.

The move to reduce bandwidth prices allows affordability of Internet services, and the BTC is set to continue its unwavering support to the country's ICT initiatives dubbed Maitlamo.

"It is important to note that reduced bandwidth prices mean that the end-user would expect lower prices from their service providers, and that will allow more people access to some of the services that have remained out of reach in the past," Pie points out. In revising bandwidth prices, the BTC has also segmented the market, structuring its pricing into Corporate Pricing and Wholesale Pricing, which includes resellers including Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Public Telecommunications Operators and Value Added Network Service providers.

The new pricing structures will ensure that the BTC provides appropriate packages for the different market segments.

The new pricing structure will be applicable to new customers and current customers looking to upgrade their service offering.
