Zimbabwe: 51 Ethiopians Arrested

12 October 2007

Harare — About 51 Ethiopians, suspected to be refugees on their way illegally to South Africa, were arrested in Masvingo on Monday aboard a Beitbridge-bound bus.

The Ethiopians were believed to have escaped from a refugee camp in Harare.

Officer Commanding police Masvingo district Chief Superintendent Lancelot Matange on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of the Ethiopians and said they had since been sent back to a refugee camp in Harare. "We arrested about 51 Ethiopians who we strongly believe are refugees and they were aboard a bus that was travelling to Beitbridge. We sent them back to their refugee camp in Harare but we did not charge them.

He said that the Ethiopians did not have passports when they were arrested.
