Zimbabwe: Students Donate Cultural Artefacts

15 October 2007

Harare — Two National Art Gallery students last week donated cultural artefacts to the Malawian Embassy in appreciation of Gule WaMukhulu culture.

Ronika Tandi and Esther Kambeu, who will be travelling for a cultural research trip to Malawi, donated a sculpture and painting with images of Gule.

The sculpture resembles three different masks of a Nyawu/Gule dancer while the painting is also a mask used in the Gule dance.

Speaking at the hand over ceremony, the Malawian Ambassador Ben Tembo said the gesture by the two students marked a milestone in consolidating strong relations between the people of Malawi and Zimbabwe.

"This marks yet another milestone in consolidation of the relations between our two people who in fact are one," Ambassador Tembo said.

He added that the only way one could appreciate one's culture was learning through religion, dances, customs, arts and history among other salient aspects.

Ambassador Tembo assured Tandi and Kambeu that they would attain the title of Malawi's Cultural Ambassadors when they return.

He commended the two ladies' courage of venturing into an art industry that is mainly dominated by men.
