Arusha — President Jakaya Kikwete will on October 14, grace in Arusha the climax of the Uhuru torch race also a national in memoriam of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who died on that day at a London Hospital in 1999.

The Uhuru Torch symbolizes freedom and light. It was first lit on top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1961. Symbolically to shine the country and across the borders to bring hope where there is despair, love where is enmity and respect where there is hatred.

Yearly there the Uhuru Torch race is staged starting from different prominent places.

The Torch was ushered into Arusha on October 8 at Kia area the border between Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions. T he torch was handed over by the Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Mohamed Babu to The Arusha's RC Isidore Leka Shirima said.

The Torch race is accompanied with a blitz of educational messages to the people on HIV/AIDS, the importance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's) and the corruption scourge.

The torch will be raced in all the six districts comprising Arusha region before its national climax when it will be extinquished at the Sheikh Amri Abeid stadium.

Projects estimated to cost Tsh. 3,988,785,502 were expected to be launched in the districts comprising Arusha region during the race.

The Arusha Regional Commissioner said Arusha is ready to receive the Torch for the race in its all six district from 8 Oct to 14 Oct. 2007 which will be the climax of the race national wide. The race will move through various projects in the region and most of the projects will be inaugurated and foundation stones will be laid.

A total of twenty two (22) projects will be launched, Fourteen (14) foundation stones will be laid and twenty (20) projects will be inaugurated. A total number of all projects are fifty six (56) and worth Tsh. 3,988,785,505/=.

The funds for these projects are from the Wananchi contributions Tsh. 532,406,350/= Development stakeholders Tsh. 1,096,862,307/=, Local Governments Tsh. 851,879,300/= and from the main Government is Tsh. 1,508,157,545/=.

RC. Shirima told the press members briefly in his office that President Kikwete will be in Arusha from 9 Oct, 2007 and he will be visiting all the projects for laying foundation stones, inaugurating and launching. He also urged to Arusha residents to come up and support the president during his stay in Arusha.

President Kikwete will be visiting The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) projects on 9 Oct, 2007 and a special mass prayers for The Late and Founder of Tanzania Mwalimu Kamabarage Nyerere will be conducted at St. Teresa Catholic Church on 14 Oct 2007 from 6:30 am and will be conducted by the Arch Bishop Josephat Lebolu of Arusha Diocese.
