Bujumbura

An attack carried out by an armed gang in Musenyi of the Mpanda commune in the province of Bubanza during the night of Thursday 11 October claimed the lives of two persons and wounded two others.

One group of the gang targeted security forces, preventing them from intervening. It is still difficult to say which group bears responsibility for this attack, since the split of PALIPEHUTU-FNL has given rise to many factions in Bubanza province.

Mpanda commune constitutes a stronghold of FNL-PALIPEHUTU. Before talks with the ceasefire monitoring team froze, many FNL combatants were stationed in this commune while they waited to integrate into the army and the police. Four hundred FNL dissidents led by Mwalimu are stationed at the Waiting Area of Randa located at 3 kilometres from Musenyi.

Another faction made up of more than eight hundred combatants is in Rugazi, a commune bordering with Mpanda.
