Bujumbura

The United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) has granted the Burundian government US$ 4 million to help the country involve the youth in the peace building process, an official source said in Bujmbura on Tuesday.

The project to be executed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports for 2007 to 2008 is under an agreement signed between the UN agency and the Burundian government.

The agreement said the overall objective of the project was to reassert the value of the Burundian youth, who constituted over 60% of the country's population, encourage them to be independent and fully participate in the peace building process at the community level.

Some of the youth were witnesses, victims or actors of the various human rights violations during the 10-year long civil war, the document stressed.

It added that the aim of the project was to launch a series of income generating activities that would help to keep the Burundian youth busy doing more useful jobs.

It said the "cash for work" policy was one of the key aspects of the project.

High labour intensive activities in sectors like reforestation, cleaning and restoring the community infrastructure that was destroyed during the war will be part of the project and will help the Burundian youth to earn their living more honestly.

Particular attention would be focused on the most vulnerable street children, young family heads, young mothers and ex-child soldiers, the agreement said.
