Bujumbura — The staff of the justice ministry began striking on this Monday 15 October after their meeting with the justice minister produced no satisfying results.
Judges are not affected by this strike. Only the personnel of the justice ministry who are bound by the status of the civil servants are concerned with this strike. The striking personnel demand the implementation of the promised increase in salary for civil servants made by the government in 2001.
The justice minister, Ms Clotilde Niragira, indicates that this strike was spotted with irregularities. She indicates that the minimum service is not insured and workers who are not bound by the status of civil servants, such as drivers, have also joined the strike. She threatens that punitive actions will be taken against the protesters if they do not resume work this Tuesday.
The strike has paralysed the justice system throughout the country and put a halt to the activities of the various courts.
