Sudan: Moi Calls for Dialogue

17 October 2007

Nairobi — Former President Moi has expressed concern over the fluid political situation in Sudan and urged concerned parties to embrace dialogue and reconciliation.

Mr Moi, Kenya's Special Envoy for Peace in Sudan, expressed his sentiments just as Sudan's president Omar Al Bashir reshuffled the cabinet, in a bid to try to resolve a political crisis.

Last week, the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) withdrew its ministers from the government of national unity, triggering the country's worst political crisis since the 2005 peace deal.

Mr Moi also called for an end to all forms of suspicion that the spirit of equal partnership between the parties in the implementation of the Sudanese Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was not being honoured.

"All parties are encouraged to exercise restraint, respect past commitments and adopt the route to dialogue." Mr Moi said.

Mr Moi said he was genuinely concerned that failure to address the present crisis may lead to undesirable consequences in the country that would threaten peace and stability in the region and disrupt normal life.

"The same may prevent the return and resettlement to their homes of the Sudanese who are internally displaced and those who are refugees in foreign countries." Mr Moi said.

In a statement issued to the media by his press secretary, Mr Lee Njiru, Mr Moi said: "I appeal therefore to the parties concerned, and in particular the National Congress Party, the Sudanese people's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the people of goodwill to embrace dialogue and reconciliation."

The former president further observed that the people of Sudan had suffered enormously in the face of conflict, hence the need for expeditious and amicable resolution of the crisis by all the parties concerned.

"Any delay in the implementation of the CPA should be resolved amicably to the satisfaction of all parties concerned." The statement read.

Mr Moi called on the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the IGAD Partners Forum and the International community and parties that witnessed the signing of the CPA to support the peace effort in the Sudan to avoid the worsening of the current crisis.
