Kampala — SPECIAL Olympics games are to be introduced in the schools' calendar starting next year.
This was announced by sports state minister Charles Bakkabulindi while welcoming back the victorious Ugandan team from the Shanghai World Games at Lugogo on Tuesday.
The Uganda Special Olympics team of 26 athletes bagged 24 medals, including four gold and 12 silver medals in the world championships.
The team, led by Special Olympics Uganda patron, the Nabagereka of Buganda, Sylivia Nagginda, took part in football, athletics, swimming and power lifting.
Bakkabulindi said Special Olympians have always made Uganda shine with honour and need to be given more attention in talent development.
"I have already directed the commissioner for sports to have Special Olympics in the schools' calendar next year. We need to identify and promote such special talents," stressed the minister.
Of the four gold medals, power lifter Muhammad Lukwago bagged two in squat and dead lift categories, while Harriet Tusiime and Doroth Nangonzi added the others in athletics and swimming respectively.
