A 3-man gang of armed robbers that specialises in robbing innocent commuters of their valuables have been nabbed. The gang met their waterloo along Kubwa - Dei Dei route on their "one chance" robbery activity at the weekend, in Abuja.

One of the victims of the robbery attack told leadership that they had boarded the unpainted Peugeot 504 vehicle at the close of office hours.

The victim, Monday Onukwe, a staff of the Ministry of Information and Communications, said that half way through the journey, he was asked to produce all he had with him, including his cellphone.

He further state that he released all he had including his handset to them to avoid any unpleasant experience. However, the three man gang did not know that one of the passengers was a policeman in mufti. The brave police officer quickly braced up and asked the driver to park. Sensing danger, the hoodlums started fighting him, but when he brought out his pistol they surrendered.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, had acknowledged the presence of the "one-chance" robbers and had given orders to his formation to deal decisively with any unpainted vehicle use for commercial purpose. He said: "I will discuss with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, on how to tackle the incident of hoodlums in the territory."

Okiro further revealed that workshops and seminars would be conducted in collaboration with National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO and other relevant organisations to curtail the excesses of miscreants especially during yuletide.

In a related development, the inspector general of police has concluded plans to develop scientific investigations through the improvement of forensic laboratories.

He said that during his tenure, he would do anything humanly possible to open more laboratories across the federation, adding that it would help in unveiling high profile killings and other criminal activities.

IGP Okiro noted that the forensic laboratory at Oshodi need to be equipped to meet with the challenges of the millennium development goals. He assured that the 7-point agenda of the federal government under President Umaru Yar'Adua would help achieve his dream before the end of 2008. He, therefore, urged all Nigerians to be security conscious during this festive season, as every police formation has been notified to beef up security.
