Bujumbura — Conflicts over leadership have reappeared within the Burundian Islamic community (COMIBU) after the celebration of the end of the fasting month of Ramadhan.
The misunderstanding was revived by the recent incident in Nyakabiga where the First-Vice President of the Republic was booed by a crowd of Muslims who demanded the release of Hussein Radjabu. The chairman of the Burundian Islamic Community who chaired the celebrations also demanded the release of the former leader of CNDD-FDD. Senator Mouhamed Rukara apologized for this incident on behalf of Burundian Muslims a day afterward.
The Secretary General of COMIBU, Aruna Nkunduwiga, denounces the new tack that leaders of this community are taking, accusing them of political interference. He proposes that the leaders of this community step down in order to make way for new elections.
