Uganda: Luyiga Remanded to Luzira

Kampala — Makerere University LC5 councillor Bernard Luyiga was yesterday charged with bribery and remanded to Luzira Prison.

Luyiga was charged with receiving a bribe from an official of a public body and demanding for money.

Buganda Road Court Magistrate Susan Kanyange barred him from pleading to the charges, saying she lacked jurisdiction over the case.

She said Luyiga would reappear today before the chief magistrate.

Prosecution alleges that Luyiga on October 12, solicited for sh10m from the acting town clerk, Ruth Kijjambu, in order to withdraw a censure motion against her.

He is also accused of receiving sh20,000 as part payment from Kijjambu before he was arrested at Fairway Hotel, Kampala.

Dressed in a white short- sleeved shirt with a plaster on his left hand, Luyiga appeared weak as he stood in the dock.
