The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, said that Eritrea is registering encouraging achievements in ensuring food security and eradicating poverty through the coordinated efforts of the people and Government.

He made the remarks at celebrations held in the Hamelmalo College of Agriculture to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and International Food Day.

Mr. Arefaine pointed out that the vigorous endeavors being exerted to achieve food security and eradicate poverty on the basis of soil and water conservation, as well as changing traditional faming to irrigation farming, would attain the set goals in the near future. He further explained that the openings of agricultural and technical colleges to develop human resource capacity are efforts in that direction.

Furthermore, the Minister noted that the pledge made to eradicate poverty at a global level by 2015 would not succeed due to the crisis being witnessed in many parts of world and the passive reaction on the part of the countries that made the pledge. He went on to express full confidence that Eritrea would achieve its development goals on the basis of self-reliance.

Mr. Arefaine called on farmers to work closely with the Government in the efforts being made to improve the people's standard of living.
