Nairobi — The simmering problems over grant freeze by International Association of Athletics Federations to Athletics Kenya took a new dimension Today, AK chairman Isaiah Kiplagat flies out to Monaco to meet the global body officials to solve the issue .
However, Kiplagat is at pains to face the issue in which he was part of the Local Organising Committee of the World Cross Country Championship, which was held in Mombasa in March and also served in the steering committee headed by permanent secretary Racheal Dzombo. He has since passed the back to LOC that was head by Isaac Kalua and the sports ministry for failing to reconcile its financial account.
The IAAF is demanding $93,872 (Sh6.2 million) that has not been accounted for and has since recovered part of the amount, by withholding the Sh4 million ($60,000) meant for AK this year from their participation in the World Championship in Osaka, Japan.
This leaves a deficit of $33, 872 (Sh2.2 million) and Kiplagat is desperate to convince the global body not to cut the same from their remaining grants.
The AK boss yesterday sought to disassociate AK from the matter, inisisting that it was the LOC whisch should answer questions on the missing money.Already Kalua had explain that the deficit was caused by a last minute cancellation of hotel bookings by IAAF officials but AK is not buying that.
Contacted yesterday Kalua said he had prepared all the documents required by IAAF and handed them to Kiplagat for reference while on his tour of Monaco.
Earlier, AK secretary general David Okeyo also moved to allay fears that the breakdown in communication with IAAF and subsequent freeze of its grants will disrupt its operations.
Okeyo noted that the financial difference will be reconciled. He said they are having a good working relationship with LOC who have showed their commitment to solve the matter.
Only Mombasa is yet to submit is final report with Ostrava, Osaka and Stuttgart (all having hosted other global event this year) having gone through.
