The Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom, said that in line with the vigorous efforts it is exerting in agriculture, energy, environment, health and other domains, Eritrea is diligently working to promote the development of science and technology.

He was addressing the 34th UNESCO Conference in Paris. Stressing the need for joint efforts and international commitment for developing the mother tongue, Mr. Semere pointed out that Eritrea has been making relentless efforts to this end, as well as eradicating illiteracy and preserving culture and identity.

Noting that peace is crucial in Eritrea's on-going national development programs, the Minister underlined that peace and security could not be ensured at the expense of the peoples' freedom, rights and sovereignty.

He went on to explain that Eritrea is striving to upgrade the education sector and that top priority is being given to the expansion of higher education that is up to standard. In this regard, Mr. Semere elaborated that besides the University of Asmara, another 5 colleges have been opened and that technical and vocational trainings are being offered.

Indicating that unremitting endeavors are being exerted towards upgrading the teaching profession, he pointed out that a national symposium on the role of teachers in ensuring quality education was organized last February to realize this goal.
