Nigeria: Foundation to Counsel Women Against Divorce

Tony Edike

23 October 2007

ENUGU-DIRECTOR-GENERAL, Bold And Dynamic Women Foundation (BDWF), a counseling outfit for young women, Ms Chika Amsy Simons, has confessed that of crass ignorance, lack of proper courtship before marriage proper and frequent domestic violence robbed her of her matrimonial home. After passing through what she called " a nasty domestic violence" during the period of her marriage, the young divorcee, who now runs a single home in Enugu, said during a press conference that her organization had embarked on a campaign against domestic violence as well as counseling for young women in Africa to prevent them from becoming unfortunate victims of broken marriage.

Chika said owing to the unforgettable experience she passed through while in marriage with her former husband whose name she did not disclose, she would not like to see other young people having such "nasty experience in marriage."

Full of passion especially for the young at heart in the African continent, but now, more for those in Nigeria, Chika said that she would not like to live and see or hear about matrimonial homes being broken apparently owing to avoidable problems that could be sorted out through dialogue and good reasoning.

"I passed through experience in domestic violence and I hold nothing against God or anybody. Rather, I think I was too young and inexperienced then," she confessed, saying she was now out to sincerely help people build good relationships and better homes.

"Whereby some body's life is abused, I will make sure such person is developed while transforming the mindset to find out the mistakes," said Chika.

While admitting that she actually made mistakes during her marriage, although she could not pinpoint the mistakes aside ignorance and lack of courtship, she explained: "The only mistake that I made is that I did not court before getting married. People should therefore court before getting married."

Asked if people will take her seriously considering her background, Chika said she is now a new creature and having passed through those ugly experiences she knows better now. "The wise ones, they say, learn from other people's ignorance. I hope to transform other lives by sharing the knowledge of my school of life with them," she said.According to the mother of three children, "I have passion for united relationships. I have passion for a transformed society. I believe we can jointly achieve it. Being single or married are all things of honour when packaged well.

We desire to carry every body along including those in the rural areas. Scheduled for inauguration on November 17 in Enugu, Chika said though some people perceived BDWF as a rather "confrontational name" for the organization but the choice of the nomenclature was never a mistake. "We answer Bold and Dynamic Women Foundation because our intentions of transforming our continent, Africa s a bold step and the strategies of our intentions are dynamic," explained Chika. She quickly added: "The foundation being tagged 'women foundation' is not strictly for women, but bears that name based on the belief that a nation is referred to as a woman. Therefore, we do not discriminate but welcome everyone irrespective of sex, tribe or religion."
