TEN fishermen from DR Congo have been remanded at Nyamushekyera prison in Bushenyi District for entering Uganda illegally, the police have said.

The suspects, who were remanded on Monday, were also reportedly fishing on Lake Edward using illegal fishing gear.

"They are already in Nyamushekyera prison after pleading not guilty and were remanded by Bushenyi Grade One Magistrates Court," Bushenyi District Police Commander Peter Onyoru told Daily Monitor by telephone yesterday

The 10 include; Mr Paruku Kamuha, Mr Shetero Kakure, Mr Augustine Songo, Mr Kakure Kihoma, Mr Sina Kakure, Mr W. Kambare, Mr M. Kamabale and Mr Kakure Miyeneko.

They were arrested near Kazinga fish landing site. The police said the fishermen had eight bundles of illegal four-inch fishing nets, four motor boat engines, four fuel tanks and four canoes.

Mr Onyoru said according to Ugandan standards, the fishing nets the men were using are undersize and as such would catch young and immature fish. The arrest is the latest in a series carried out by both the Congolese and Ugandan authorities. Ugandan fishermen have on several occasions been arrested for allegedly fishing in Congolese waters.

Lake Albert that neighbours Lake Edward is shared by both DR Congo and Uganda. It is the focus of a new hunt for crude oil on a continent long dominated by West African oil sources.

The two countries have recently been embroiled in deadly clashes, largely over the ownership of Rukwanzi, an island straddling the disputed border in the middle of Lake Albert.
