Last year's Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon women champion, Irene Jerotich of Eldama Ravine will not defend her title during the race to be held on Sunday.

According to Athletics Kenya (AK) Koibatek branch Geoffrey Kokoyo, Jerotich left the country for Italy to attend to a medical problem after she was injured during a training session.

The mother of two first made history by becoming the first ever woman from the district to finish the race in the second position during the 2005 competition.

The following year Jerotich went one step up running a race for her life to winner last years edition of the marathon, the first of the the Great Races on Earth (Groe) series.

Jerotich was injured while on a routine training session in Eldama Ravine before she moved to her Kaptagat Athletics Camp in Eldoret where her condition worsened .

Her manager advised her to seek for seek for further medical attention in Italy as the injury she sustained needed experts in order to heal fast.

'I received her call last night while she was at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and she informed me that she would not be taking part in the Nairobi Marathon as she was travelling to Italy to seek further medical attention' said Kokoyo.

Jerotich will be out of the country for the next one month as doctors find a last solution to the injury.

The official said that his branch was optimistic that Jerotich would have retained her title which saw her pocket sh 1.5 million last year but her sudden departure has thrown the branch into confusion.

'This is a big blow to AK Koibatek branch and her fans who were warming up to cheer her up as they follow the race proceedings in the national television ' said Kokoyo.

In the past two years when she has been participating in the race, normal activities at the dusty Eldama Ravine town came to a standstill as her fans were glued to the TV sets following her steady progress.

The reception which the residents of Eldama Ravine had been preparing had she won the title will now be missed by many fans in the district.

'We knew she would retain the title if the training programme she had been undertaking at Eldama Ravine were anything to go by 'said William Sawe a resident of Eldama Ravine.

Fans in Eldama Ravine are disappointed with the news.
