Kampala — THE Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has lashed out at people who attack the Catholic Church. Bukenya said he was proud of being Catholic, adding that he would continue being loyal to the Church.
"It is not fair for people from different religions to criticise each other. Even if you do not believe in the Catholic faith, respect each other," he said.
"I read an article in one of the newspapers discrediting the Catholic Church for not recognising Jesus Christ. That was false," he said.
He made the remarks during a fundraising mass at Naluzaali Catholic Church in Buwunga sub-county, Masaka district on Sunday.
The mass was led by the Masaka Diocese Bishop, John Baptist Kaggwa, and sh16m was raised in cash and pledges.
Bukenya urged the public to observe the freedom of worship and the rights of places of worship.
Flanked by the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, Bukenya said the Catholic Church must focus on fighting poverty among its followers. He urged the people against using poverty as a scapegoat for not responding to the needs of the Church and the clergy.
