Bujumbura — Teachers of the National Council for Secondary School Teachers (CONAPES) have finally decided to return to work after three weeks of striking. The decision to return to work was made during a meeting of CONAPES insiders that took place on Sunday.
The teachers decided that if the government does not implement its promises to them within a month they will go back on strike without notice. A commission has been set up to analyse points on which no agreement has been reached.
In the meantime, teachers of the primary schools have started their strike, demanding the implementation of promises that were made to them by the government in 2003. Primary school teachers decided to strike after the government failed to meet them for talks last week.
Three trade unions have decided to participate in this strike which affects all public primary schools of Burundi.
