Successful black entrepreneurs are to be given the recognition they deserve at the Black Business Supplier Development Programme (BBSP) awards in Mpumalanga on Friday.

The Department of Trade and Industry introduced the awards in 2002 to recognise entrepreneurs who have excelled in business and to help fast-track the entry of small medium and micro enterprises (SMME) into the mainstream economy.

"These awards can take them from one level of business to an international level where they can travel and showcase their works anywhere in the world," said Gugulethu Ngwenya, a communications officer at the department on Thursday.

The awards aim to increase the number of black owned enterprises and allow them to benefit from government's affirmative programme, which gives priority to black suppliers.

Ms Ngwenya said the winners not only stand a chance of winning a R20 000 cash prize but also a free export management course provided by the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA).

There were 2 091 competition entries from across South Africa this year, most entries or 70 percent of them, came from Gauteng, followed by seven percent from Mpumalanga and six percent from the Western Cape.

The competition categories include the ability to market and promote the enterprise, quality management systems, the ability to enter targeted markets, training employees in specific business skills and upgrading management of the enterprise through training programmes.

To qualify for the awards, the business has to be at least 51 percent black-owned and have significant representation of blacks in the management team.

The companies must have been trading for at least one year and have an annual turnover of no more than R12 million.
