Eritrea: Govt Supports Political Process Scheduled in Libya Towards Resolving the Darfur Issue - President Isaias

25 October 2007

Asmara — President Isaias Afwerki said that Eritrea supports the political process scheduled to be the focus of discussions in Libya next Saturday towards resolving the Darfur issue. He made the remarks today when he received and held talks with Dr. Nafie Ali Nafie, the Sudanese Presidential Assistant.

The President also affirmed Eritrea's readiness, as part of the regional initiative, to play its due role in coordination with Libya, Chad, Egypt, the UN and the African Union.

Stating that the forthcoming meeting in Libya on the Darfur peace dialogue is only the beginning and not the end, he expressed Eritrea's conviction that all parties should achieve peace through continued process and patience. To this end, the Sudanese Government of National Unity bears major responsibility, President Isaias underscored.

Dr. Nafie Ali Nafie on his part said that although obstacles exist and there are problems in the Sudan that complicates the peace process, the Sudanese Government of National Unity is ready to promote genuine peace through overcoming these impediments.

In the discussion in which the two sides conducted regarding the disparity witnessed recently within the Sudanese Government of National Unity, President Isaias noted that such differences could be resolved through patient dialogue. In this regard, he expressed his wish and conviction that the on-going dialogue between President Omar Hassan Al Beshir and First Vice President Salva Kiir Myardit would overcome the differences and lead to the full implementation of the peace agreement reached.

Expressing support to this view, Dr. Nafie Ali Nafie asserted that serious efforts are being exerted to overcome the differences and that the Sudanese Government is ready to fully implement the Naivasha Peace Agreement.

On arrival in Asmara today, the Sudanese Government delegation was welcomed by Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Head of Political Affairs at the PFDJ.
