Ghana: Accountants Must Upgrade Themselves

25 October 2007

The Director of Training at the Accountant General's Department (AG), Mr. Samuel Duedu, has stressed the need for accountants to distinguish themselves in order to satisfy public needs and expectations.

He said it was time accountants acquired the relevant skills and knowledge so as to meet international standards, noting that if the accounting institutions were of international standards, public accounts could be displayed on the internet to enable the public to get access to such accounts to promote public confidence in accountants.

Mr. Duedu, who was speaking at the opening of a 3-day workshop for accountants in the Volta Region at Ho as part of a nationwide exercise embarked on by the AG's Department, said the workshop formed part of the ongoing reforms in the department.

The director noted that regular in-service training and the provision of the appropriate working tools were vital in ensuring productivity and efficiency among accounting professionals.

Mr. Duedu observed that much attention was not paid to human resource development of the accounting institution, which, according to him, affected the performance of accountants.

He pointed out that the current problem confronting the AG's Department was more of technical difficulty that had affected the payroll of some public sector workers and promised that, with the reforms, the anomalies would be addressed.

Mr. Duedu therefore urged accountants to update their knowledge and skills, respect the ethics of the accounting profession and, above all, be self-disciplined in order to achieve the desired financial goals.

The Director of Public Financial and Management Reform Sector of the AG's Department, Mr. Daniel Demelevo, cautioned that accountants who failed to perform up to standard would be dismissed to pave way for more qualified persons.

He observed that there were many lapses in the accounting system, which were attributable to non-compliance with accounting rules by some accountants.

Some of the accounting officers who spoke to The Chronicle commended the AG's Department for the foresight in organising the workshop, which, they noted, would go a long way to help them perform more efficiently in the discharge of their duties.
