Uganda: Nakibinge Follows in Sister Kisakye's Footsteps

Kampala — HAVING watched her older sister, Harriet Kisakye, basking in the musical limelight for years, young, up-and-coming songstress, Mariam Nakibinge, has finally decided to follow in her sister's footsteps.

But the 19-year-old burgeoning singer is not the explicit lyricist that Kisakye was at the beginning of her career.

The first thing you notice about Nakibinge is that she is a more intense singer, emerging with music that is beautifully written, and she pens all the lyrics herself.

Nakusiima, the first single off Nakibinge's album is an effort that exceeds expectations. Many local FM radio stations have already picked interest in the song. It is in rotation on CBS FM, Radio Simba, Super FM, Radio Sapientia and Beat FM.

The song is the confession of a woman who has fallen head over heels in love with a man. It has a repetitive chorus and a catchy piano loop, which makes it easy to get lodged in a listener's brain. This dance floor-oriented song should win Nakibinge more fans.

Nakusiima, like the rest of her songs, was produced by David Senyonga of KAN Studios. But Nakibinge's music competes bitterly for a standout title, as evidenced on Nkole Ntya? (What should I do?), a piano-led story of heartbreak.

She continues to guide her listeners into her world of love-making music with tracks like Ndayira Kuba Naawe (I swear to be with you) and Kajombe.

So, things look promising for Nakibinge. Whether we are ready for her yet or not, the burgeoning singer deserves a pat on the back for an invigorating debut.
