Bujumbura — The reinforcement of army positions carried out on 24 October in Gakungwe of Kabezi commune has created insecurity. The army indicates that it was expecting an attack against FNL dissidents similar to the one of 21 October.
Heavy gunfire started by the National Defence Forces last night claimed no casualties, although it caused many people to the flee their homes for Kabezi and Ruziba. Houses were looted during the clashes, although the Assistant Chief of Staff, General Major Godefroid Niyombare, who is also member of the truce monitoring commission, denies any human or material damages.
The population of Kabezi demands that these dissidents be relocated somewhere else.
FNL dissidents in Gakungwe have not been disarmed. They continue to mingle with the population, tracking down those suspected of collaborating with Agathon Rwasa's movement. Since the attack on Gakungwe on 21 October, no high profile member of the government has ever visited this area in order to mollify the population which was living peacefully with FNL combatants before dissidents were moved there in a bid to encourage dissidence and reign in collaborators of Agathon Rwasa.
Although the mediator in the peace process, Charles Nqakula, has indicated that dissidents will be grouped at Randa in Bubanza province where they will get food and medical assistance early this week, the relocation has not yet started.
