Burundi: Towards the End of the Uprona's Hardships

26 October 2007

Bujumbura — Conflicts that have been tearing apart Uprona party will be over by the end of this week.

This was announced by the leader of Uprona, Mr Aloys Rubuka after the meeting he had yesterday with the head of State, President Pierre Nkurunziza.

The head of state indicated that he was not involved in the problems that have been disturbing the party that was founded by Louis Rwagasore.

These talks aimed at setting up a new cabinet are also due to end before the end of this week, as Mr Rubuka announced.

These talks started after too much pressure was exerted on the president by the international community in order to find a way out to the political stalemate that was disturbing activities in the national assembly.

Talks with Frodebu had been concluded although the implementation has not really started. Uprona was still the sole party with which the head of state was still dealing in order to find a settlement.

This breakthrough that was reached yesterday and might put an end to the wrangling which followed the dismissal of the Dr.Martin Nduwimana, the First Vice-President of the country.

The leader of Uprona and his nearest indicate that the position of the vice-first-president of the republic comes to this party. The problem of the representation in these talks has been resolved as well.

Since the dismissal of Dr Nduwimana from his party and the positioning of the bulk of Uprona members of the parliament for their leader, two splits appeared. One wing is led by Antoine Cishahayo, the assistant of the leader of Uprona and whose wife works in the office of the First Vice-President of the Republic and another to the leader of Uprona.

Attempts to reconcile these two parties have been thwarted by security forces which has been unable to ensure security to supporters of Rubuka whenever there was a meeting at the main office of Uprona in the mayorship of Bujumbura.

The breakthrough of these talks might lead to the formation of a new ministerial cabinet. Since the President address to the nation, a month ago, the population has been waiting for a new cabinet. Activities at some ministries have slowed down due to the imminence of cabinet reshuffle.
